Do you get New Year’s Day?

I’m not sure I get New Year’s Day…do you?

I usually try not to rail against things like this that don’t and won’t change and that aren’t that big of a deal, but I was just sort of wondering why we celebrate it.

I’m as happy as the next guy to get a fresh start, a new year, a chance to start over, might make some resolutions or something…

But…it’s a national holiday. Like, the mail won’t be here, I can’t work out at the YMCA because it’s closed for the “holiday,” can’t go to the bank because it’s New Year’s Day. We’re essentially celebrating…you know…I’m not even sure what we’re celebrating!?

I get celebrating Martin Luther King Jr., Columbus, Presidents, Veterans for sure, Independence, Christmas, but New Year’s just kind of sticks out like a sore thumb.

My wife insists that the folks who might sip a bit too much tonight need the day off tomorrow to recoup. She’s probably right.

  1. I think that if we are going to RE-BOOT for a ” New Year”, then we should be able to Re-Boot everything we didn’t like about the last year. Now that’s something to make a Holiday for.
Re-Boot Forgiveness ( start over and be forgiven for our last years misgivings and faults..WWJD)
Re-Boot Friendships lost (re-new those Friendships lost for whatever reason)
Re-Boot a Job loss ( have the 2nd chance at a re-do on whatever we did wrong)
Re-Boot Bad habits and Attitudes we aquired last year
Re-Boot bad memories and erase them, keeping only a lesson learned.
the New Year should be about a Fresh start on everything, be granted immunity.
That would be a Day to Celebrate.
